Clapton/Daltry at RBC
"A friend and I set out to the RBC Center in Raleigh on a spring-like evening to attend the Roger Daltry/Jay Dupuis concert. Having seen Dupuis over a dozen times through the years, I kind of knew what to expect. I have also seen The Who several times but had never seen Daltry on his own before. His voice isn't what it used to be but whose is? Daltry opened his set with The Who classic I Can't Explain, a great start. Roger surpassed all expectations. The set was a majority of Who songs with a few other choice tunes intertwined. He had to pull back on a few notes and just lowered others, but it was no detriment to the music. Who classics included the aforementioned I Can't Explain along with Who Are You, Teenage Wasteland, and one of my highlights of the night, The Who's version of Mose Allison's Young Man Blues. His band was outstanding, very tight, very energetic, and very talented. Clapton still has the fire when he wants to bring it out. It just doesn't come out in some of his song choices. He did pull out some gems like Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out and Tell The Truth from the Layla album. During the middle of the set, he played 4 acoustic songs including the blues classic Driftin' and Driftin', the acoustic version of Layla, and a very fine version of Running on Faith. Clapton was as professional as always and as skilled as always, but the set list was somewhat disappointing. He panders to the casual fan too much and instead of playing his best songs, he plays the ones that were huge hits like Wonderful Tonight, Cocaine, and I Shot The Sheriff. It's not that I don't like these songs or the way he plays them, except for maybe Cocaine. If I never hear that song again, it will be alright with me. Another favorite was the Cream classic Badge, a sublime version of Old Love, and the encore of Crossroads. I'd much rather have the electric version of Layla as the acoustic doesn't capture the tortured anguish of an unrequited love. Overall, a very fine concert even if the RBC Center isn't the best venue."
